Essays in Honour of An Zhimin

Essays in Honour of An Zhimin

This book is published in celebration of the 80th birthday of Mr. An Zhimin, an authoritative Chinese archaeologist. It collects 37 Chinese, English and Japanese articles on East Asian archaeology. They are contributed by scholars of the succeeding generations of Mr. An Zhimin on their recent research results. Topics related to prehistoric archaeology include lithic studies, zooarchaeology, origins of agriculture, early ritualistic ware production, bark cloth, incised marks found in Dawenkou culture, jades of Liangzhu culture, and bronze cultures in northwest China, etc. On historic archaeology, there are discussions on palatial structures, burials, and bronze inscriptions of the Shang and Zhou dynasties; epigraphs, glass wares and garrisoned towns of the ancient Turban Kingdom during the Han and Northern Wei dynasty; and the burial system of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms.

Collecting works of scholars from Mainland China, Europe, the America, Japan, Australia, and Russia, this book is an excellent resource for understanding the development of ancient East Asian civilizations. A number of collected articles even examine the archaeological problems from a multi-disciplinary perspective, engaging scientific methods to present their new observations on Chinese archaeology. It is undoubtedly a valuable reference guide for studies in archaeology and antiquities.
