Walk Lingnan: Heritage of Ming-Qing Cantonese Scholars

The best way to enjoy the prime of spring is perhaps to have a good walk with your friends. In this study trip, we will walk through the traditional quarters in Guangzhou, Foshan and Jiangmen to visit the fine residences, ancestral temples, gardens and villages of a selection of great Ming-Qing Cantonese scholars, whose esteem and excellence in learning intertwines with the local architecture and nature, and whose spiritual world and life philosophy remain a true inspiration today.

Date of study trip: 14-16 May 2024

Participants: CUHK Undergraduate students

Quota: 20

Fee: HK$500 (Most of the traveling (including high speed rail train fare), accommodation, and other related costs will be sponsored by government funding.)

  • Song Tang Village, home to top keju scholars

  • Chen Baisha Memorial Hall

  • Wong Fei Hung Memorial Hall
  • Ip Man Hall and exhibition of Wing Chun martial arts culture
  • Foshan Lingnan World

Remarks:

  • A deposit of HK$2000 is required, which will be refunded to students who have completed the trip after deducting HK$500.
  • Participants are required to read relevant articles, attend a briefing session before departure, join a sharing session, and write a brief report after the trip.
  • Participation in one “In Dialogue with China” study trip can be used to fulfill one of the prerequisites for a Pass-with-distinction (DI) grade when enrolling in UGCP1001 and UGCP1002 but can only be counted once. In other words, students who are concurrently enrolled in the two courses would need to participate in two enrichment activities (a talk or a trip) to be eligible for a Pass-with-distinction grade for both courses.
  • Priority will be given to students currently enrolled in UGCP1001 and UGCP1002 in the selection of participants. All applicants will receive notification of the selection results by email.
