The Mao era (1949 – 1976) is often misunderstood as a time of “isolation” and “closing off from the world.” In this talk, Professor Wilcox will demonstrate how dance served as a space where Mao-era China’s diverse and fluctuating connections with the wider world were explored intellectually and concretized in physical bodies and experiences. In spite of real challenges and barriers that sought to limit Cold War-era mobilities, dance made possible experiments of empathy, proximity, and mutual learning that advanced radical ideas of geographic reimagining and political relationality.
